Event Information

Sarah’s Circle, a safe refuge for at-risk women in the Uptown neighborhood, will host its 1st annual Summer Walk 5K on Saturday, June 12. 100% of the proceeds will benefit Sarah’s Circle, which provides essential services for women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

We encourage participants to raise pledges for the event and create teams of friends, family and co-workers. We will be giving away Cubs tickets to both the individual and team that raise the most money. Every walker will receive a Sarah's Circle water bottle. After the walk, we will have a grillout in the courtyard of our building.

All ages are welcome. Walkers who are unable to walk five kilometers are still welcome to walk part of the route.

A large portion of the walking route, which starts and ends at Sarah's Circle (4750 North Sheridan Rd), will be along the lakefront.

No need to register in advance. Just go to www.sarahs-circle.org to download the event brochure, which includes the pledge sheet.

Hope to see you there!

About Organization

Located in Chicago’s Uptown community, Sarah's Circle has served women who are below the poverty level and/or homeless since 1979. Our clientele comes not only from Uptown but increasingly from all over the city and suburbs as well. We fill a critical service gap in our community by providing a full range of social services uniquely catered to at-risk women in a woman-friendly environment. Our agency provides a full range of life-sustaining necessities, such as: two meals a day (five days a week), laundry and shower facilities, hygiene products, and clothing. We also provide communication services — telephone, fax, internet, and a mailing address — as well as computer literacy training if needed. Over the long-term, we aim to empower women through daily educational programs, comprehensive case management, clinical services and housing services.

Our multi-faceted approach caters well to the needs of our clients, many of whom face multiple challenges in their lives. Out of 363 women who received intakes in 2009, 39% struggled with substance abuse, 59% struggled with mental illness, 57% had chronic health problems and/or a physical disability, 72% were homeless and 100% were below the poverty line.
