UCAN
http://www.ucanchicago.orgOur vision is that youth who have suffered trauma can become our future leaders.
Beginning as an orphanage in 1869, UCAN has become a multi-faceted social service agency providing a safe harbor to orphaned, neglected and abused youth, children, and families. Our vision is that youth who have suffered trauma can become our future leaders, and our pledge "to nurture the promise of Chicago's children" guides us in supporting over 12,000 children, youth, and families annually in a nurturing environment that can promote healing, provide education, and help to prevent violence.
Unique among social service agencies, we offer a full continuum of services including but not limited to a residential treatment facility, a therapeutic day school, extensive community programs, support for pregnant or parenting teens, foster care/adoption placement, vocational training, and internships for promising former wards of the state. This array of services enables us to move clients from one program to another as their needs change, yet spares them the transitions and gaps caused by moves from one agency to another.

Urban/Suburban Youth Summit
Event Information
The Summit will unite youth, community leaders, policy makers, and advocates in a solution-focused agenda to improve the public's understanding about the effects of gun violence, to engage community support in reducing gun violence, and to educate on the issues critical to America's youth. The main goal of the Summit is to foster youth civic activism and leadership, with youth attendees identifying the most significant issues pertaining to their age groups on gun violence and working with community and business leaders to identify and implement solutions and strategies to end gun violence. In addition, Senator Emil Jones III will be speaking. The Summit will include:
Highlights from UCAN's 2009 national Teen Gun Survey and local focus group findings
Various youth workshops reflecting discussions on focus group findings as well as education and policy issues
Creation of a "Call to Action" plan detailing what youth can do tomorrow to advocate for change, and how youth and adults throughout Chicago communities can work together to make a difference in reducing gun violence
Following the Summit, a Youth Steering Committee composed of youth, adult allies, and community partners will be created to advocate for safer communities, seek greater parent involvement and meet with legislators in Springfield, IL and Washington, D.C. Working in collaboration with the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence, the Youth Steering Committee will provide input on strategies to prevent gun violence and crime in addition to presenting at various regional school assemblies to encourage youth to get involved in their own communities.
