Kindness is Doing Something Special for Kids, better known as K.I.D.S.S. for Kids, was founded in 1991 by a group of friends who were grateful to have healthy children and felt compelled to help others who were not as fortunate. K.I.D.S.S. for Kids is one of the largest donors to the Department of Family Services at Children’s Memorial Hospital, raising and contributing more than $6 million to date. The group raises the majority of its funds through events such as Kohl’s Step Up for Kids, which brought in more than $460,000 last year. It recently committed $4 million to Heroes for Life: Campaign for Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, to support Family Services in the new facility.

Family Services helps patients and families cope with the challenges of illness and hospitalization. Team members work to address the diverse spiritual, social, developmental and emotional needs of critically ill children and their families. Some of the offerings include playgroups and activities led by child life specialists, the support of social workers, inter-faith chaplains and interpreters, as well as Heartlight, a bereavement program for those who have lost a child. K.I.D.S.S. for Kids was the first and is now the largest supporter of Heartlight.
