Support pediatric medical research conducted at Children’s Memorial Hospital & Research Center

MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of the Medical Research Junior Board Foundation (the “MRJBF”) is to support pediatric medical research conducted at Children’s Memorial Hospital and the Children’s Memorial Research Center.

FOUNDED 1992: The MRJBF is an Illinois not-for-profit organization and serves as a junior board to the Medical Research Institute Council (the “MRIC”). The MRIC, an auxiliary board of the Children’s Memorial Foundation, has been raising funds for medical research in Chicago since the 1950s. Both the MRJBF and the MRIC work under the umbrella of the Children’s Memorial Foundation to promote activities and community awareness for Children’s Memorial Hospital.

BOARD MEMBERS: The MRJBF has approximately 60 members consisting of young professionals in the Chicago metropolitan area, ranging in age from 22 to the mid 30s.

FUNDRAISING: To date, the MRJBF has helped Children’s Memorial Foundation raise over $1 Million for pediatric medical research initiatives at the Children’s Memorial Hospital and the Children’s Memorial Research Center.

CHILDREN’S MEMORIAL HOSPITAL: Children’s Memorial is recognized as one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country by rankings published in U.S. News & World Report. Its physicians are on the faculty at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. Children’s Memorial’s 1,100 pediatric specialists focus on more than 70 specialties in 17 locations. As Illinois’ only freestanding hospital dedicated to children, Children’s Memorial treated over 113,000 children in 2007. Thanks to generous donors, the hospital plans to expand and move to a new location in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood in 2012. The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago will not only serve more patients, but it will also help strengthen the partnership between Children’s Memorial and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago due to the proximity of the new building.

EVENTS BENEFITING CHILDREN’S MEMORIAL HOSPITAL: The MRJBF has hosted many well-attended social and educational events in the Chicago metropolitan area to help raise significant funds for research. Fundraising events range from cocktail parties, art exhibits and silent auctions, to a live band karaoke championship and grand openings of restaurants, theaters and retail stores.

The MRJBF’s annual events have become some of Chicago’s premier junior board events, each averaging more than 400 guests in attendance. These annual events include the ABC (Art Benefiting Children) Event, a trendy exhibition of artwork for sale by local artists, and the MRJBF’s signature Cocktails for a Cause (CFC), which combined raised over $140,000 in 2008.

BOARD MEETING ACTIVITIES: The MRJBF meets on a monthly basis to plan fundraising events. The MRJBF also invites guest speakers such as Children’s Memorial Hospital physicians and researchers to educate its members about current medical issues, treatments, and advances. Members of the MRJBF also have the opportunity to tour Children’s Memorial Hospital and the Children’s Memorial Research Center to stay informed of ongoing developments.
